My Z is leaking oil. It looks like it is leaking between the head and block. I took it
to a auto shop. The guy told me if the head gasket was leaking it would not be oil.
It leaks water only. He said that it is leaking from the front timing cover and the fan
and air is pushing the oil to the side of the engine block. Is he right about only
water leaks from the head gasket.
Thanks

it is most likely leaking from the valve cover gasket. the oil will run down the side of the head and down the side of the block. the head runs at a much higher temperature than the block, so the oil on the head gets burned off and the oil on the block remains. this makes it appear like it is leaking out of the head gasket.

I had a similar problem a couple of times. The first time, it was the front cover crank seal. The second time, it came from a not so obvious place. I have a 72 240Z and it was leaking from the bottom of my mechanical fuel pump. Each pump of the arm was pushing a drop or two of oil out. If you have one, you might want to check there. Hope this helps...

I have an oil leak between number 3&4 cylinders on the oil filter side also. More like it is weeping though, uses about a quart every 1000 to 1500 miles so its not much, but sill leaves a good sized oil streak. It is at the block to head joint, there is no oil above it at the valve cover joint. The head does not get hot enough to burn the oil off as someone sugested - if it does then you should have other heat related problems. This is where the oil passage to the valve train runs. Retorquing the head did not help this probem in my case. I think the only repair will be to repalce the head gasket.
