Leak Down numbers?

529 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  palladin
I know what a good number is....My race car maintained about 2%. I have do do a VG-30 swap on my Son's '88 200SX this weekend and I can't do a compression check on the donor motor on the stand. Does any one know how low the leak down number would be to affect proper combustion!

My 83 had compression of 175 down the line. Leak down was about 10%. I posted the results few months back.
I'd be happy with those numbers. We'll just see how it goes...I'd rather do the motor swap than head gaskets, given the time available.

Just read an article where an experienced builder said that better than 7% is what he thinks is Ok but then goes on to say his builds are 0 to1% for many miles.

My Z is getting a rebuild as it's at 22%. It doesn't run that bad but has considerable blow-by. I worked with a NASCAR modified builder who didn't like the ZG rings as they let no pressure past to pressure seal the second ring which resulted in poor oil control. Not that the motor would smoke or anything, but the tiniest bit of oil in the combustion chamber "poisons" the charge resulting in lower HP.

When i tore down my 82, I found ring gaps under each other. You'd think ther'd be 3 compression rings.
