it does sound like timing. If you have a helper, use a timing light to see if you're even close to 10deg BTDC. If thats good, maybe check valve lash again??

Oh, check the condition of your fuel pressure regulator. I had a friends car that blew the diaphram out which let gas pour directly into the intake. Though her car would run barely, but it would cough alot and sputter when shutting down. Easy to check - just remove the vacuum hose, turn the key on to pressurize the system, and if any gas comes out the FPR vacuum nipple - bingo! But I dont think thats the problem.
