Puting together my inteior after a new carpet/upholstery job and re-finishing all the panels. Couple things:

1. My seatbelt rubs and squeaks against the new opholstery on the side of the seat right behind my ear. It is most annoying. Short of growing broader shoulders, What can I do? Was there a retainer or something in the original set-up to prevent this?

2. The light in the ashtray was disconnected behind the stereo. It looks like they cut some wires and used something to power the POS stereo. Everything in the area is a jumble of cut wires, Radio Shack 22Ga speaker wire and elec. tape. A. What colour wires in the original harnes does it hook up to? B. What controls it? It doesn't appear as though it is controlled by the act of opening the ashtray. Does it stay on all the time whilst the lights are on?

3. My full dash cover from Victoria British is REALLY tight. It will not go back far enough to go down over the lip under the dash pan in the middle. Is a horribly cracked and sunburnt dash 'swollen'? Park it is the sun with the windows up and get it real hot? Grind down portions of the dash? Been there?

4. My dome light DNW. (YES, panel off, new bulb, fuses good) Where does the wires feeding it surface again? Passenger floorpan? Console?

Sounds like you gotta bunch of Trial and Error type things.

Regarding your seat belt noise. Try spraying some WD40 on the affected area. It won't hurt anything -- and it just might help.

Regarding the dash -- sounds like you don't have anything to lose. Grind/scrape/cut away.

Get an ohm meter and start monkeying around with the wiring. You'll figure it out.

Good excuse to buy a new CD player/preamp/subwoofers, etc.

Hate to say this, but all will be revealed if you remove the dash. On the '75 I'm trying to restore, the former owner had started REPLACING all the wiring around the radio opening. Don't ask me why. So anyway, almost all the wires in that area for the hazard switch, lighter, etc. are orange.

I was having some problems figuring out, among other things, how to make the lighter work again. Finally bit the bullet and removed the dash. It's not really that hard if you have the time, patience and room to open the doors all the way. Lots of screws and stuff, but just keep track of them and don't wait more than a day or two before you put it all back together or you'll start to forget what screws go where.

Anyway, it became immediately obvious what wiring went where, even with some of the wiring changed. On the lighter, the thing that illuminates the ring around the lighter is a fiber optic thing — a solid plastic thing that takes light from the ashtray bulb and feeds it to the lighter. (or maybe it's the other way around.) Anyway, the actual plastic fiber optic thing was cut (again, why I can't imagine). Easy fix for me was just to rip the whole assembly out of a car in the wrecking yard.

Also, another benefit of having the dash out is that you can MUCH more easily install the dash cap.

Good luck!

Ash tray light doesn't have a harness on my 78. (yours should be same way) There are two wires that comes out from the light.(male and female plugs) female plugs up to single male coming out from the dash and other one(male) plugs up to double female plug from the dash. The ashtray light comes on with light switch. I hope This helps
