Hey Guys,

Just looking for a little advise. First off, I did search the forum and
found a similar situation, but no solution was posted. Anyway,
I have a 1990 NA 300ZX, when I have the car in gear and the
clutch in, I get a grinding type noise as I cross the 2200 rpm mark.
I can hold it there and get the noise to sustain. Also, when I'm in
gear with clutch dis-engaged the grinding sound happens as the
engine winds down past the 2200 rpm mark. This sound is much
louder when the car is cold, but still present once the cars been
running for a while. Any help on this would be great, I always like
going to the mechanic with a little prior knowledge.

does the noise occur while not moving? Like with the tranny in neutral, and foot off of the clutch. At least then yuo could isolate it btween an engine noice and a tranny/differential noise.

Hey Haulnazz15,

The sound is only when the car is in gear. I spoke to the guy who
originally posted this problem and he had to replace the variable timing
control springs. I'm not sure if this is my problem or not. I was hoping
this had happened to more than one other person.

It's in first and second for sure. I'm not sure about the other gears, once
I'm out of second the wind noise would be louder than the grinding. I
have about 150,000 kms on it. The car runs great other than this sound.

Hmmmmmm just a random ...

thought..... Get the car into the air SAFELY on jack stands or on a lift. Use your fist and pound on the heat sheilds from the downpipe to the cats. If you come across a rattle then odds are the U bracked securing the heat sheilds to the pipe has rotted and broken. This may be what you are hearing.

Update: Just reading through some old posts and realized I didn't provide the solution.

The problem was the VTC springs. Once I replaced those the sound was gone.
