Hey Z techs and driver's,

How much performance do I need to whip on a vette? What will give me the most? I have a 81 280zxt stock at this time. I have some extras but not yet installed yet. Help me fullfil my dream....and to make it reality... Just wanted to see some different techniques of speed........

Before you spend a lot of $$$$ drive or at least ride in a Vette to see what your up aginst. Just my .02

I have a 83ZXT like yours. A frends dad has a Vette that is at least 10yr. old it is in a completely different class.

Well first off ya wanna make sure youre engine is strong enuf to hold the insane boost you'll need. If it is, then start be getting at least a t3/t4 hybrid turbo. Then get 550 cc injectors, popular size and will flow enough fuel to help. Try getting a 300ZXTT fuel pump too, I hear those fit, and of course it'll be better than your old one. Then get an intercooler, from say a Starion. Easy to find and less than $200 sometimes. Then when you get allll that hooked up, run about 15 psi. Oh yeah, a new fuel pressure regulator geared for performance. Then, throw down about another 400 bucks and get yourself a 75-100 shot Nitrous kit and have fun! But be sure to hit the NOS at the right time, don't wanna scatter your motor.

Well, as I recall, the '81ZXT w/ auto tranny was faster than than the same year Corvette in stock form. If you're talking C4 or newer, get real. Sure, it's possible, but only by means of insane boost or a V8 swap. I drive my GF's '93 Vette regularly, and as someone stated, it's simply in a different class. I just drove a brand new C5 6 speed the other day, and I can safely tell you not to even try.

Enjoy the car for what it is.. or spend every penny you earn in pusuit of your dream.. your choice.

You're correct. According to the May 1981 Road and Track review, the 81 ZXT auto was faster than the stock 81 Vette, Porche 944 turbo and Saab turbo.

Check out BSP class !

BSP Zs kick butt on outrageous vettes in auto-x. Need early (light) Z and major handling and engine upgrades... Very hi-tech.... I think you can be competitive for about $20k plus lots o smarts and elbow grease.

I don't know about a ZX, but I calculated that you'd need about 270 hp in a first gen to have the power to weight ratio of C5. A C4 is heavier and has less power then a C5. In a 240/260/lightened 280 you need about 235 hp to have the same power/weight ratio.

****, norm runs better then a C5 in a n/a 240!

Also, these people who tell you not to try are comparing C4/C5's to their 150 hp Z's. Of course its a different class, but a Z can safely be made to run with C5's and beat C4's with the right mods.

Basically, if you want to beat C4, do 13.5's or better, C5's low 13's or better.

Also.....

Don't forget C4's go back to 84. If you're talking an 80's Vette, I wouldn't worry too much. They only had 200 to 250 horsepower in a 3300+ pound chassis. Some of them took over 7 seconds 0-60.

Also, don't forget that the Vettes up to 96 had a chassis that dated back to 84, which was, quite frankly, an overweight noodle compared to the C5. I've always loved Vettes, but the C4's were not a world class sportscar. The C5's are.

Well isn't this interesting just the other day this aceant person (its now obvious who the KID is!) was ask about dragging with 11" and 10" deep dishes, so I ask what the **** a 11" deep dish is and he calls me a KID, tells me the 78 is the crappiest year of the Z then he tells Tony D that the 76 is the crappiest year and that hes full of crap about his LSR's. Also states that he'd run circles around me or some crap then Walla here he is asking how to be fast. LOL

How predictable

Well my POS 78 running normaly aspirated runs neck and neck with a C5 6spd up to 118 then they walk me. I have never been beat by a C4 - for the record I've only raced mostly stock ones with maybe exhaust and usually have a car or two on them by 100. I fall right into the power ranges as stated by the other Mattz (243rwhp) And I still say they are in a different league you can make your Z hang with one maybe even beat it here an there but your building a time bomb. You have to remeber vettes aren't that much heavier than we are, have twice the torque and have much better aerodynamics.

Aceant don't come to a Z site and start talking trash about other year Z's. Anybody who knows anything about these cars realizes that the Z is just a body the rest of the car is what you make it there really is no bad year just some not as good parts here an there.

BSP oWns

I tear apart all the older vettes that show up in my region. I used to run my 1980NA ZX and now my 82ZXT in BSP. The vettes are good..but only in a straight line...throw in a couple of curves its the Z all the way. :)

I appologize, I must of hit a nerve...I got much love for Z's and the history of the classes, just not yours...sorry. If you weren't hating so much, I wouldn't have had to clown you on the response. Anyway, that's cool your car did beat a vette....

0-60 in 7sec.?????****...that's sloww.....Man, don't get offended about what I said. Matt78Z is buggin'. All the Matts I ever met was cool....I like the vettes too, but they were too expensive and had no comfort. Instead, I bought a 72,82non-T,81ZXTA. Turbos rule. I'm working on a project right now for the 81'.

You posted a question that was unclear so I asked for an explanation and you start putting my car down, even though you know Jack about it, and start name calling. Who haten? Seems like only you, but see this crap doesn't bother me it only gives me something to do at work. You haven't clowned me nor could you - if you think you can email me and we'll meet up.

Why do you say you apologize then turn right around with more crap, are you confused? I'm here cause I like Z's and lots of other fast cars - I don't post BS and my response was smart ass like but so was the way in which you posted the ?, I was having fun. I don't post messages to be cool, not quite stupid enough to believe my text can make me cool! I enjoy beating vettes there pretty stiff competition, I have primarily set my car up targeting them.
