I would like to know if there is any of those free modes or inexcpensive mods that you can do to a 81 turbo to improve horse power.

You can get a dial- a-boost 100 bucks ,or make your own like I did get a three way tee and some vaccum hose and tee into the vaccum to the turbo this will turn up the boost whith a needle jet of some kind .If your lucky you wont need to get a adj/popoff valve ,if you go over a few pounds of boost your factory valve will vent.Make sure you do not overboost without a intercooler .Just stick with a few pounds over stock you should be ok its up to you ,just be wise . adj/popoffvalve-70 bucks .You will feel the diffrence.

I dont see how just tapping into the vacuum lines will increase boost. After you tap into them with the T and some vacuum hose...how do you actually make the adjustment?

Have a muffler shop make a "test pipe" to install in place of your cat. converter, also run premium fuel and advance your timing.
