I know this is probably an old subject, but why does the Z have 170HP while the ZX has 135HP, 145HP? They have the same engine(L28), right? So does anyone know exactly why there is such a difference in power? I just want to find out so I can eliminate this bottleneck in my 81ZX.

The Z is rated at 170 HP GROSS (at the engine). The ZX is rated at 135 HP NET (at the rear wheels). They are essentially the same.
Nissan changed its way of rating engine HP, along with the US automakers, to help with insurance costs.

I read that the 145HP figure was rated at the fly wheel with A/C on and all other belts at the pulley creating load.

YOU are right 170 is the 280Z's HP but on the 280ZX it is not HP it is 135 BHP
that is brake horse power..on the wheel and not the engine.
1979-81 280ZX's had 8.3:1 compression ration. 1982 and 83 had 8.8:1 comp. ratio which boosted the BHP to 145.
Try a free flow and a K&N filter and you are easily in the 155BHP ratio !!!

I was under the impression that the '82 had 8.3:1 compression. What source did you see 8.8:1?
