Dear Z friends, how do you tell if a oil pump is bad or if its getting weak because I don't trust the oil gauge

Uusally it's the gauge that's gone bad. The Z units are notorious for going out and being inaccurate. Mine would go up to about 50+ Psi and then start to drop off at higher rpm's. It was quickly replaced

It's the gauge sending unit, I've never seen a L series engine have an oil pump failure.

Concensus is, that if you replace the sender unit(which is most likely your problem) use a Nissan oem replacement. A lot of people have reported problems with the aftermarket units.

Well, the OEM units are unreliable too. Replace your sender before you try anything else; if your sender isn't bad, it will be soon.

If you want ..........

..........a positive comparison reading, 'tee' a small gauge in line with the oil pressure sending unit.
