Curiosity got the better of me the other day so I borrowed a noise meter from work and ran a few tests to determine the noise level in my car at different conditions. The decibel results on the 'a' scale are as follows:
Sitting in the driveway, windows rolled up - engine off - breathing quietly - 45 dba
engine idling,inside - 62 dba
outside at 3' from exhaust tip - 77 dba
Inside,cruising in 5th, 45-90mph - 77-80 dba
roll the window down at cruise speed +3dba
Wide open throttle, 5-,6000 rpm - 88-90 dba
Credence Clearwater Revival - 95+dba

FYI - anything over 85dba can eventually cause hearing damage. Does that mean I have to give up two of my favorite things - WOT & CCR? NOT!!!

My wife says she can hear me leaving to work all the way to the first intersection when I slow down about a block away. From in side our apartment at night. From in the car it doesn't sound annoyingly loud. I like when I drive by pedesterians and they turn thier heads back when I floor it past them. :)

I put on 2.5 inch pipe- no cat - to a 2.5" two chamber Flowmaster with 4 " tip. The car is always noticable. Not exceedingly loud until 2200 RPM. Then booms out a resonant note. Beyond 2500 it quietens back down. If you romp it, it screams.
