How Much (thickness) Acoustic / Thermal Insulation Under Carpets Can Be Used?

Hi, as I do my 1983 280ZX 2+2 restoration, I will use acoustic / thermal insulation under carpets from firewall to the rear hatch. I haven't decided what product to use yet (possibilities are Dynamat products, Raamat, several others). Using the Dynamat products as an example, the thickness can add up (the following is per the recommendations on the Dynamat website for the most effective acoustic / thermal application):

1. First layer - Dynamat Extreme (1/16th inch); and
2. Second layer - Dynaliner (1/4 or 1/2 inch) or Dynapad (1/2 inch)

This would total up to 9/16ths inch thick. Is that too thick? Could this be done and use the normal carpet backing also?

My question is not what should I use (or even what product), but how thick can be used of these types of products and the carpet, etc. still "fit" correctly. Ideas?

Thanks,

JGW

It's like food at a Greek wedding. More is better than not enough. Anything over 1/4" of any good quality will make a huge difference with a Z car. Just watch thickness in the gas pedal area so it won't stay floored by itself. The stuff I used added up to about 1/2". Quiet like a Lincoln Continental. NK

What would cause the gas pedal to stay down due to too much insulation?

The gas pedal could catch at the bottom if the insulation and carpet is too high. Kind of like the issue Toyota had with the gas pedals hanging up on the floor mats.
Forget about adding insulation, i just did my whole car with lizard skin. It sounds like a new car now. Nice and quiet, easy to apply, easy on the wallet, and gets all the places insulation does not

nice video, kinda long but it is so worth watching. This is a great product please watch the test showing the before and after

How much product did you use and where did you apply? How thick? How much did it cost?

Thanks, JGW

Palladin, how many square feet do I need for coverage? firewall, floors, doors, deck, etc.?
measure your car, legnthx width that will give u square feet, i waited an hour and put 2 coats on, i used it under anything that was to have carpet on it
Buy a big roll, sell what you don't use. Woody and I split the cost on a roll. Think it was $160 total. I had some left over...gonna use it on the new car. You will get another Z.
Psssht, floor mat in Toyota. Son, I've got beach front property for you in Arizona.

? I may be slow, but . . . ?
Drive by wire. Have you ever known a computer to ALWAYS work correctly? I'm in the automation business and not even the legacy product we offer is TOTALLY glitch free. Forget about the other three lines of product, I wouldn't power a space shuttle!
Love your throttle cable, and show it with lube! That came out wrong,
i used some rubber insulator spray/ sound deadener i found in orilley auto and then you can put dynamat or whatever on top of the spary i just have the spray and it works pretty well
