Currently I have a '79 NA 280zx. The car is fairly clean, some putty behind the drivers side rear wheel, some bubbles under the paint on each door and a bit of rust at the top edge of the front left quarter panel. It's away right now for the winter, but when spring comes around, I plan on dumping a good bit of cash into it to get it where I want it. New rims and tires, new struts and possibly coil overs all around, headers and exhaust, and then do some body work to get rid of the rust there is and get it painted. I was just wondering if it is worth putting the money into this car or selling it and buying one with little to no rust at all? Any opinions are welcome.

Hard question to answer unless the frame rails are rusted then it is time for a new one.

Even the frame rails can be fixed.

My 83 looked much worse than yours does and after some effort, about five years ago, we got her back. I had holes behind each wheel, three holes in the floor pan along the drivers side and two on passenger. The were holes under the battery and above were the exhaust came out at the rear. The valance, like yours (under the nose) were bad and replaced with new. Having said this, I just scrapped the shell of another 83 because I could almost stand in the holes in the floor boards. It all comes down to how much you like the car and how much it is worth to you to keep.

Of course, it can be a never ending battle to stay ahead of the rust, but it can be well worth it.

Hi DrX.
I'd sell a rusted Z before sinking ANY cash into it. If your frame rails are not rusted then.... maybe.... I'd consider some cash at basic area's....etc..tires, brake pads.... There are just too many ZX's out here now that are not rusted at all and many sell for very low dollars. Look for one of these. My 02. shane-

Wow...

I wish the cars around here were that solid... hard to find one that does'nt have basketball sized holes in the floor. Half of the Z's in the salvages are there because they were flinstone cars and got pulled off the road. People up north here go to great lengths to keep their cars solid. I only wish.... My next z is going to be at the end of a road trip I think!

I concur with Dylan. I am in Canada (Toronto) and by our standards this car is in excellent shape. I also concur with the other that the rails are what matter. But, My advice would be to go for it, if you like the car.
