Hey, I was wondering if any body knows how many horses a 82, L28 puts out when its stock? I cant find the rating anywhere. One other thing, whats the best kind of muffler to use with a 3 into 2 header with a 2 1/2 in pipe, is a triple chamber flow master good or should I go with a Borla and how much hp would I gain? Anyone know?

Thanks!!

The stock HP is about 150 I think. You won't see much of a gain from just a header and exhust upgrade, maybe 5-10 HP at the very most. The real benefits of an exhuast upgrade will be seen in combination w/ head work and a better cam. The Flowmasters sound good, I have a 2 chamber w/ a Dynomax bullet up by the header on mine w/ 2.5in pipe and it sounds mean.

145hp is approximately what the factory rating was.

Horsepower wont differ much between aftermarket exhausts. It comes down to 'How loud do you want to get'. Everybody has different exhausts here on the forum but the only problem is, you cant hear them. I used to have just pipe after the cat. No muffler at all and thought it sounded pretty good. But after awhile the sound at speed was getting to be too much. Now I have a Motorsports header with a GReddy muffler I yanked off a Prelude at a junkyard. A little too quiet, but has a nice tone to it. Soon I will take out the cat and replace with a pipe to increase the sound a little, just to see what its like. Also use the replacement pipe for an Air/Fuel ratio meter sensor to get this new engine tuned properly.
I know this didnt specifically answer your question, but truly, there isnt a specific answer. Other than using 2 1/2 pipe, the rest is up to your personal taste.

5-10hp?

Doubtful, really doubtful. This header/exhaust topic has been covered before, but on a stock engine, the pickup is closer to 2 HP and arguably it comes from the exhaust and not the header.
Headers are great above 6000, but with an engine with a power peak closer to 5500, they are really a wast of money unless you are putting some real mods into the mill.
