I tried pulling the needle off of an extra speedo, maybe from a ' 78. the needle did not come off. I finally pulled hard with a pair of pliers (didn't matter if I hurt this speedo). The shaft itself broke off at the base, the needle was not just pressed in but SEEMS to be one piece with the shaft. I pulled straight up, no twisting leverage thing. I'm scared to try my guages now. You guys sure 'bout this

I have No idea why it would be that hard. It's really just a compression fit. No glu or anything like that. When I took mine apart I pried from under the center of the needle closest to the shaft, a little on one side, then a little on another side, until it just came off....
