I have a '83 ZX that has been changed from a turbo to a non turbo
engine. The engine starts for a second and then quits. The guy I got the car from had installed a GM ing. mod. and it made no difference. Also is there a book I can buy to learn what fits what.

Hi Charlie------------Sounds like you aren't getting power to the injectors. This could be a number of different things, but I wonder if when the conversion to N/A was done the dropping resistors were installed also. The turbo doesn't use these resistors, which convert the 12 volt signal down. If the injectors were subjected to a full 12 volts, they may be damaged. Another question would be if the ECU was changed out with the conversion. This would also cause problems with the injectors. Your car is possibly starting with fuel from the cold start valve, which will cut off a few seconds after firing up.

Another thing to check is the pressure on the fuel system, after the filter. Should be 36 psi or close, less may indicate a failing pump, bad filter or bad pressure regulator.

Check these things out, and let us know if the problem continues. The best book is the factory service manual, but many of the procedures for checking the EFI system are also in the Haynes manual, which is sold through AutoZone, for one.
