Help With Paint and Interior Color Choices for Restoration - 1983 280zx 2+2

My $200.00 1983 280zx should come home tomorrow or next day, wearing a new suspension, new manifold, tuned up, etc. Next comes deciding what to do on interior and exterior.

Currently, it wears the brown / gold paint with beige / brown interior. I don't care for brown, especially for the paint.

The interior is in very good shape for the age of the car. Most of the interior trim pieces (beige and brown) are in very good condition. But, the brown dash is badly faded and cracked, the vinyl console cover is damaged, and most other pieces just need a thorough cleaning (and at some point will SEM each of them to look new).

At a minimum I will be removing and repairing / refinishing the dash (also need to replace stereo, speakers, and water valve to heater, the heater core or or both at that time) . When I do that, I can either go back with brown or change the color. If I change the color, I have to change the other dark brown pieces.

If so, then do I go back with beige and have all beige interior? Some other color?

On the exterior, I do not want to keep the brown and gold paint. I could possibly see keeping gold, but not the brown. But, the paint has to coordinate with the interior and vice versa.

So my dilemma - Since I do not like the brown paint, what color exterior paint would coordinate if I keep the dark brown / beige interior? British green? Gloss Black?

Or do I just bite the bullet so to speak and get rid of the brown interior and go all beige or beige and ____________?

Any pics / thoughts will be appreciated.

Full story is in the Member Rides forum, but yeah. Got a great deal. After airing up two tires and charging battery, took it out on the highway!
I had an '82 and then an '83 that were both a dark metallic brown with gold pinstriping.

I've never been a big fan of brown either, but I thought those looked really sharp, and the interiors were the same as yours.
In the rides section some where is a very nice 2 tone brown. I to am not a fan of the brown color but that Z was done perfectly.
Being a purest at heart, I wouldn't change radically. There is a color chart at www.xenons130.com

You could change it to a black gold model. That was 1980 so the tail lights, bumpers, ans side pillar molding would be different. It is a different shade of gold but you have the interior for it. I'd lose those seats. The leather seats rode entirely different, totally different design and feel. Find a brown dash cover. You could try repairing it, some people have been successful.

I'm not attached to the seats long term at all. I like leather.

The "black gold" model had the same beige / chocolate brown interior? I like that paint job, but would I have to grow the 'fro and 'stash? :)
That's what makes that car. Also, it opens up a career as a porn star...LOL
Can't really tell about the paint in the pic, or if the driver's seat has a split, but, for $200, I would shampoo the seats really well, clean up the door panels, get a dash cap and drive.

Glen, seats are good. No holes tears or splits. I am going to clean And drive for a while, but will paint in next 6-months or so. By then have to decide on long term interior and exterior colors
You would be surprised what a pressure washer will do. Be careful if they are worn. A PW is great on dirty mats too.
What are your thoughts on a solid gloss black paint job, beige interior (where the beige currently is), and then refinish the chocolate brown dash, console, other chocolate brown pieces to black?
How straight is the body, if it has any imperfections then gloss black would show everything.
Body is very good. Before painting I would have body work done. I assume a really good body shop can get it to excellent? The defects are a few minor dents only. No wrecks, crumples, etc.

(Hi i just completed resoring the interior of my 1982 Datsun 280zx GL (Grand Luxury Model). The exterior color is the origional color: Metalic Brown. the interior is tan. Being the Grand luxury Model the seats where done in tan leather and imatation suede monogramed with the words 280zx repeated over and over. I replaced the origional seats with all leather seats (out of a 1981 280zx) that I found on Ebay....I LUCKED OUT THEY ARE A 9 OUT OF 10 SET!! If you are serious about restoring your 280zx make sure to PLAN AHEAD! D"ONT do it all at once...do it in sections. You d"ont reliize how many pieces there are! Take your time and make sur you use a GOOD RESPIRATOR!!! As for the paint I used ONLY SEM products. DONOT USE Light Buckskin (#15093) too light. That's the color to use if you want to match 27 years of sun fadding. USE Palomino (15323) and Low Luster clear (#13023). I used 25 cans of each!!! That's 4 coats of Palomino and 4 coats of Low Luster Clear!!Go to the SEM SITE and study what PREPERATION PRODUCTS you need to use on the doors vinyal and ALL the rear panels and all the fastners and plugs, For installation of the doors and panels I used a product called Carmacell by AP/Armaflex (TAP18230) It's a double sided installation tap -30 linear ft. roll, 1/8 thick x 2'' wide self-adhering...VERY EASY TO WORK WITH..WILL SOUND DEADENING KEEPS THE HEAT IN AND COLD OUT!!!!...As far as deciding to use the color Palomino (it matches the closest to the orgional color (where the sun has'nt faded, you can note this when you remove the rear panel, around 1/4 inch edge. The Palomino is richer color...more toward your standard interior Ferrari color. The color looks great and if you decide to paint the exterior of your car glossy black , then the Palomino is the way to go. If you post your name and addresss I CAN SEND YOU OUT SOME PHOTOS. Best of luck ....and remember it's a BIG PROJECT....BE PATIENT!!! AND ABOVE ALL... DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!! PEACE!!! Robert

If you look around for an original black car. It was very pretty with gold pinstriping and the rough part of the wheels painted gold. I always liked that one.
