I have a '74 260Z that has a factory electronic ignition. Apparantly, this was the first year Datsun put in electronic ignition. The problem is when I turn the key, I sometimes get a click from somewhere under the hood, but the starter motor doesn't turn. If I turn the key to the off position and back on, the starter motor will eventually respond. I checked the starter motor by hot wiring it to the positive terminal on the battery and it turns every time, so the problem is not the starter or solenoid. My guess is that the transistor ignition module is malfunctioning, but I don't know how to test it. Questions: (1) what is causing the starting problem, (2) if it is the transistor ignition module, wouldn't I be better off anyway by changing it out for an aftermarket electronic ignition such as the one Crane Cam makes? Any recommendations.
