My car starts, idles for a while and dies. It starts each time to shut off within 20 seconds. The car dies when I give it gas, even the slightest increase in RPM and it bogs-dies. Before it progressed to this point, when the motor was cooler, it would rev to about 2200 RPM, lose power and go back to idle. Once the engine was warmed, it displayed similar sumptoms as above.

This stock Z car sat idle for about 5 years before I woke it up. I added new:

* Fuel Pump
* Fuel Filter
* Air Filter
* Fuel Hoses
* Water Temp. Sensor
* Gapped Spark Plugs
* Spark Plug Wires
* New Rotor & Distributor Cap
* Second Hand Fuel Injectors
* New Oil Pressure Switch

Things done to try and remedy problem:

* Took off Air Flow Meter and checked prongs on plug- very clean. Flap is working fine.
* Throttle body switch on side of throttle body prongs on plugs sanded- rust observed on one prong. Not sure how to adust this?
* Air regulator prong sanded and blue corrosion cleaned off of prongs and female receptical.
* Replaced water temp. sensor on thermostat housing.
* Replaced fuel injectors.
* Emptied fuel tank with old gas.

I've been trying to solve this probelm since June. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I had almost the same problem on my 77Z a few years ago. I took it to a mechanic. I turned out to be the air flow meter. Have this double checked. If it is bad DONT buy a new one. The can be rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

You may also want to check your fuel pressure regulator to make sure it's functioning properly. I didn't see you mention that.

First, did you take the black plastic cover off of the airflow meter and check if it was clean inside? maybe something climbed up inside somehow?
Second, Check the cold start valve and thermotime switch.

It does sound like the airflow meter. I remember a few months ago i changed the timing belt. when i got everything hooked up the car ran like what you described. I looked around found that i missed the connector going to the airflow meter. When i reattached the connector the car ran fine.

hope this helps you out

Another failure that will give similar symptoms is a split in the corrigated boot (down inside the pleats) between the air flow meter and the throtle body. The car idles just fine because the split is closed, but when you give it gas the engine moves slightly, the split opens, and the air to the engine bypasses the air flow meter. A relatively easy and cheap fix.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP :)

You have all provided some excellent diagnoses of the problem. I forgot to mention that I also installed a fuel pressure regulator. I ordered a new rubber boot for the air flow meter and am looking at replacing the fuel filter as there may be sediment or rust built up, since the car was awoken from about 5 years of sleep with a half tank of gas. Thanks again.>
