looking for help/advice.

a few months ago, we bought a 78 280. my dad had a 79 280 ZX years ago, and my wife had a 77 280 when she was in high school. driving this around had been a GREAT trip down memory lane for both my wife and i.

when registering the car, we determined that the car probably hadn't been driven in 5 or 6 years. the last registration expired in 95. the DMV didn't even have the license plate in the database anymore. we knew the car was going to need some mechanical TLC, but the exterior is in GREAT shape. no rust, interior is in good shape, and it passed the CA smog test. so we bought it.

anyway, here's the problem i'm working on right now:

when cold, the car starts fine. no problems at all. when the car has been running for awhile, especially on the freeway, then i can't get it to start after turning it off (to stop in at a store, for instance). once the car finally cools down, then it starts fine. i think that the starter is going bad, but i'm not positive. if anyone has any advice on something else to try or look at, then i would GREATLY appreciate it. i'd like to see what else i might try before i go out and spend money on a starter that may/may not solve my problem.

thanx

Re: help/advice wanted -- posible bad starter on 7

When you say it wont start when hot, what do you mean really?

It will not turn over?

It will turn over but will not run?

When you hold the key in the "start" position can you hear the fuel pump run?

When you put the key in the "run" position and you push the flap in the Air Flow Meter gently open can you hear the fuel pump run?

When you turn the engine over do you have spark at the coil?

When you turn the engine over do you have spark at the spark plugs?

What is the battery voltage with everything shut off?

What is the battery voltage when you attempt to start the engine? Cold? Hot?

I would suggest you get a FSM on CD from:

Answer all the questions above and we will try to help you out.

bad solonoid I think. my 78 used to do that. I took mine back to the store and exchanged it. Now it's fine. If you have to buy another one get one from NAPA.

I went through 3 starters in 4 weeks before I went with a Nissan remfg unit.
There is an excellent article in the archieves about adding a relay to the
starting system to avoid the weak voltage to the starter. Ron Bradley is the
author and he has a diagram of the circuit.
Good luck!
