Jon
Check your cable connections from the
controls on the dash to the engine
compartement. Sounds like loose
cables!

If the heater valve isn't traveling
it,s full distance when you select
heat, youwont get the maximum effect.

It's a simple matter of cause and
effect.

when a warmer temp. is selected in the
cockpit, the cable conecting the
heater valve to the lever will open
the valve t allow more hot water to
enter the heater core ; if thevalve
doesnt move when the lever in the
cockpit is moved, the cable connection
is loose.

To adjust; set lever in car to full
warm, then check valve in engine
compartement is fully open.

This allows max. amount of hot water
to enter heating system. Now select
full cold on your cockpit control. Now
you should get cold air, Vallve in
engine compartement is fully closed!

Simple Huh! THE more the hot water the
warmer the car!

I have a 260Z and have had this problem in the past. The darn heating system is pretty tricky on a Z car--full of vacuum sources that open and close flaps etc. It also has magnetic valves(electrically controlled open or shut valves) that open and shut allowing the vacuum source to engage the heater.
I hope you have a repair manual--the Chilton's is okay--but the factory service manual is best. This way you can diagnose what states the system is in and to eliminate possible causes.(what valve should be open or shut)

I would look at all the rubber vacuum hoses near the magnet valves because you need the vacuum source to engage the flaps. The other thing you should look at it is the magnet valves. You might try tapping on the magnet valves with a small wrench because they tend to malfunction when they age and stick shut or open and you will have just cold air blowing. I bet the A/C works though, huh?

If you narrow it down to the magnet valves--you might temporarily run a bypass so that you can at least have heat--not only for yourself--but to defrost the windshield.

Tell me more!
