Hi, I have 71 240z for about a year. I took it to the mechanic for cluch problem and the guy found out that there is a leak from head gasket and its burning the coolant in cylinders. So, I asked him that how much would that be for replacing the head gaskets and he said that'll be $650~700. Since I'm not good at mechanics, I don't know if it is average price or I may be able to find cheaper way or do it my self with reading a manual. Any advise is appreciated. Thank you.

You can replace the thing yourself in about 5 hours. I have done it before with no problem. Here is what ya do.

unbolt intake and exhaust manifold
disconnect fan and all belts
disconnect all lines to block, coolant and other crap
unbolt head bolts and remove
unbolt cam sproket and remove(mark cam position and slide a wood wedge to keep chain from dropping)
pull off head
scrape head and block surfaces to ensure clean with razor)
place new gasket sprayed with copper sealer
reassemble head and other stuff
Use new seals on Manifold and other things removed that had gaskets

Haynes Manual shows what to do and is fairly easy to follow
