It's a pretty striaght forward job, just follow the manuel. Be extra carful when taking the timing chain out so you don't pop the spring tensioner out of its hole, it adds a couple hours to the job. Also use the felpro gasket, everything I've ever read about the job recommends them, and I've had no problems going on 25k. Hope that helps.

The felpro gasket is pretty good from what I hear. I take it that your Z isn't a turbo. If it is or if you plan to add one sometime soon, I'd recommend getting an HKS steel headgasket. They are reusable and from what I understand they never blow with reasonable hp. They run about $100 bucks, at least that's what I got mine for a few years back.

Be careful with the timing chain. If it's dropped in, you'll have to take off the front cover. If you do end up taking off the front cover (I did), make sure you get the bolt behind the oil pump. I don't know how a naturally aspirated 82 280zx is setup. I have an 82 280zx turbo.
