Hello z car guru's! I'm new to owning a zcar, but i love it allready. I have a 79 280ZX, with a 5-speed. I want to know if its possible to get 200hp from my engine. I allready have a cold air intake (I made), a header made for leitzinger motorsports in 1980 serial #680-1028 from Stahl (find the greatest things on ebay) it empties into dual 2 1/4 inch exhaust, and a crane xr3000 ignition. I want to keep my fuel injection, and no turbo or supercharging and a cr of 10:1 would be nice. So, if its possible to get 200hp, how should i do it? Oh, and I have one other question, my car has the grand luxury package, did it come with a gear ratio for the rear diff?
Thanks for any help.

You can get close to 200hp, but it takes alittle work and some MONEY. This is how it might be possible. 1. header with free flowing exhaust, you may have that already,. 2. cold air intake, again you may have that,. 3. remove the stock fan and go electric. 4. mild cam , MSA's 10-2001 is a good choice for your car in keeping with your 8.3 compression. 5. very good value job. 6. larger throttle body. 7. rising rate fuel pressure regulator, set in on 17 psi. 8. Bump your timing up from the stock 10 degrees to 17 degrees. Hope this helps and good luck!

Worked for me, 240+ hp

Hey,

I have an 82zx n/a with over 200 hp. For me, this required very little expense. I'm running my timing at 35 degrees advance. No knock on premium gas. Also, valve lash is tightened across the board. Self-made cold air intake. Glass-pack muffler. Cat has not been removed and I pass emissions like a new car (since replacing the O2 sensor). Biggest power differences came from timing and valve adjustment.

Ps. I know no one seems to believe me. ugh. Beat 91zx with intake and exhaust, 3-4 cars in first gear and pull on it to the end. Spanked civic running intake, exhaust, and spraying NOS. Been a while since the 1/4, I'll run it again over christmas break. I do remember i never got 100mph trap speed...99.5 :(
