when i did my timing belt job a yr ago i put the harmonic balancer on EXACTLY as it was taken off....well, since then my timing has gotten off (long story) and I can't use a timing light on my car b/c the marks dont line up...its as if the HB was put on 1 bolt too far clockwise....because when i retard the timing such that the marks are 20 degrees BTDC the car won't run....its retarted too far....SO, i'm tempted to take the thing off tonight and just rotate it 1 hole counterclockwise...but i want to make sure that the thing's on right
my question is....if your z had the HB taken off, when you put it back on is there any reasonable way to KNOW that the thing's on just as it should be?
I've tried to just adjust the distributor till the car ran okay...but when my car runs sucky at idle it usually smooths out on the highway, and when my car runs nice at idle it runs sucky out on the road....so, what do u guys think?

The rubber may have separated, in that case get a new balancer because it could come apart at any moment.

Atually the pulley seperates from the balancer and as they wrote already the balancer will only go on one way. Just take the 6 bolts out and turn it till it is right. put the bolts back in. leave the balancer alone
