My 1980 280zx never starts the first time i crank it. Usually it start the second time. On hot days it takes 3 to 4 cranks to start it. I've worn-out my starter, it's starting to hange up/ slow to disengage after engine has started. help clueless in georga.
Check that the cold start valve is working.
This is located on top of the intake manifold and has a fuel line going to it.
To check it, remove the two bolts which attach it to the manifold. Leave the fuel line connected (or, if you have to disconnect the fuel line to remove the valve, reattach the fuel line). While cranking the engine over, it should squirt fuel for about 8 seconds. This provides a bit of extra fuel for start up only. It will only do this when the engine is cold, as it operates off of the thermotime switch located in the thermostat housing.
If it doesn't squirt fuel, you can try to jumper the valve directly to the battery to make sure it's the valve.
Otherwise, it could be the thermotime switch.
