Genral clutch question

431 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  spot
When a clutch starts to go out, and is not replaced before it is totally gone, can it damage the fly wheel? Like with brakes, will the clutch disk wear down to the bare metal?, or does something in the design of it prevent this from happening. I have a car that slips a lot if you try to accelerate hard from a stop and it has done this for almost a year. I just try and take it easy on starting out in first gear. This is just something I've always wondered about.

It shouldn't do anything to your flywheel, I have seen it where the clutch is so bad that at a complete stop you can put it into any gear without putting the clutch down, the only thing that you have to worry about is that you don't warp you flywheel because of the extra heat that happens when the clutch slips.

Well, even if it doesn't damage the flywheel, (the only thing
that could really damage it would be heat cracks), you'll
probably want to get it resurfaced and a new ring gear put
on it anyhow. If it hasn't been done in a long time it's well
worth it... it cost me about $60 to have it done to a giant
flywheel from one of my pickups. Might be more or less for
the Z.

Make it simple. when a clutch slips it does damage tothe flywheel. resuface it or replace with new one.
Thanks, one more Question

Thanks for all of the info. I am trying to make it last until after winter, so I can do it myself...

I have another question. In my zxt the clutch makes a funny sound for a moment while engaging, and then stops after engages. It sounds kind of like someone scratching the chalk board with thier nails. It stops once the car is driven a little while and warmed up, and it doesn't always do this. I have no problem with the clutch slipping on this car. Anyone know what this sound is??

I hope we get some response on this one, because my clutch does the same. Whenever the clutch pedal is being moved there's a scraping sound coming from the clutch. I need to find out what it is, and how to replace it.

Re: Thanks, one more Question

Sounds to me like a throw out bearing. Cheap part. Easy to replace, if the tranny is out. :)
Hope it helps.
