Do you have the bolts out of the filler neck at the gas cap.
They should be out until you get the hose on the tank.

Gas tank problem 78 280z
After 6 years I'm starting to put my 1978 280z back together. Today was expansion tank and gas tank day. Everything went great until we tried to connect the filler hose to the tank. the hose is short by 2". WE also noticed that the drain plug was under the fuel sending unit not centered as it shows in the FSM.
The question is. is this a 280z fuel tank or an earlier model? if its an earlier model what problems may I have when I finally get it running? As to the filler hose the one I have is 15". I need one 17". Is there one that was made for the Z that is that length?

No we didn't although they are out now as I have the filler neck and hose out. Will look at it tomorrow.
