I'm pretty sure it's bad inside the tank. I noticed that there is a round plate I can remove from inside the trunk to get to the top of the tank. Can I pull the float out through that hole, or do I have to drop the tank? (again).

Steve,
Just went through this. It will pull out though the top. The thing is held in place by that bayonet style ring. Move clips counterclockwise and it will disengage. There is an O-ring under the plate so be careful not to damage it. $90 for sender unit or $161 for combo fuel, voltage gauge. Mine turned out ot be the gauge. I opted for a used one for $15 from salvage yard. It doesn't work either. I'm an expert at accessing the gauges now. Get to do it again this weekend.
