For the headlights I would check the switch on the column rel easy to remove and isn't that complicated just make sure all the connections look good. For the brake lights you might need to clean the switch that the brake pedal goes up against it may be worn out. I don't think there are any relays involved in this, so it has to be the switch.

I wouldn't think you 'd have to replace the entire dash. That sounds ridiculous. It's just a wiring bugaboo somewhere. Do the headlights and brake lights flicker or whatever in some sort of coordinated way, or do you think they are separate.

Get out the test light!

I think they are separate. and sometimes you dont even have to press on the brake for the brake lights to come on. and sometimes they wont come on when you press on the break.
thanks for your help

You might want to check all wire harnesses you can get to under the dash. Make sure they are pluged in good. Almost sound like a lose or shorted wire or bad switches. No way you would have to replace the dash. If you can't fix it you might want to remove the dash but make sure you plug everything back in good you don't want to do that more than once. It's hard enough on a 75 I can't imagine and 83. A test light is the easiest. I have a digital meter that beeps when it gets an ohms reading or when it looses one. Very usefull too but ain't worth the expense just for that feature.

Good luck
