The fuel gauge in my 1972 240z registers some fuel level when the ignition is first on but it will not hold the reading, the needle slowly drifts back to empty. The car has a new sender unit, with some fuel in the tank the sender registers a steady 30 ohms. When the fuel sender leads are shorted at the tank the fuel gauge needle rises to full and then slowly drifts back to empty. Is the gauge bad? Why does the gauge produce a reading and then returns to empty? The fuel gauge does not want to hold the resistance reading.

Help please. Anyone had this problem?

take a look at the connections between the sender unit and harness and then the harness to gauge connector. might be some corrosion hiding in there creating more resistance than there should be
