If your talking about the fuel pump on the head, it's sort of possible. There is a seal on the diaphram shaft inside the pump. There is also a small vent to equalize the diaphram. If the seal is busted then engine fumes from the crank can get out the hole giving an illusion of an exhaust leak in the fuel pump.
Yes there is smoke coming out of it. You are right is does not smell like exhaust.
Engine fumes would probably be a better description. If I replace this fuel pump (yes, the one on the block) is there a gasget to get as well?
Thanks

Also Check with Nissan for a rebuild kit. I will come with a new diaphram, 2 valves and the seal in question. I don't know if you can get the seal by itself anymore. It may be cheaper than replacing the whole pump.
