I Love my car (71 240Z with an L28). But the exhaust smell is just killing me. I thought I had fixed it after seeing a split PCV Hose and replacing it. Unfortunately the smell is still there. I have noticed some smoke coming from the front passenger side of the engine. Car runs fine other than some white smoke and some pinging both under acceleration. After reading a recent entry sounds like I may need a head gasket. This is reasonable since I just got the car running after being stored for seven years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ryno
Also check for leaky gasket where manifold connects to exhaust pipe. Also, it could be a cracked or rotted manifold. Could also be your other suspicion: a leaky gasket causing oil to be cooked by the engine and brought inside the car.
You probably already know this, but Z cars are notorious for sucking exhaust fumes through the rear. Fix involves new gasket/seals around hatch, rear lights and fuel vent hoses (that go to the canister under right rear inside panel). To help test if this might be the prob — of course, it could also easily be coming from the engine, too — drive the car with windows up and blower full "on". The blower sometimes pressurizes the car to the point it won't suck fumes in the back. If it works, now open the window a crack and turn blower off. If fumes return, they're probably coming in the back. If they never leave, they may be more likely coming in the front.
hello, check all areas that could allow fumes to enter the car...weather stripping...tail light gaskets. in the front check the areas that open to the cab of the car..like where the heater hose comes in the fire wall the choke cable at the fire wall......and the one that everyone forgets the rubber boot that sits below the shift lever ...mine was mostly off and in pieces...i did all these areas and installed a new inner shift boot added a longer exhaust tip and wow no more fumes in the car....good luck michele 1971 240z in FL.
I agree wiyh JR...probably coming in around the hatch. I bought my car new in 1971 and it smelled from the get go.
