Electrical Problem

Greetings all ..........

I have a 1976 280Z, that I purchased new. I am the original owner. Recently I have had a problem with the electrical system. Four out of five times when I go to start the car, the entire electrical system seems to shutdown and the engine doesn't start. The starter will engage just for a brief second and then all power is lost. Volt meter goes completely to the left ... total discharge. No lights, radio, horn, nothing works. When I release the ingnition key, the volt meter returns to about half way, but still no power. I can jump start the car with no problem and everything seems to be OK.

Battery checks out OK, alternator OK. Have not done anything much to her lately, except replace the coil about a 18 months ago. I have installed an electric fan, but that was done about 4 years ago and have not experienced any problems with that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your starter and the battery cable connections. I have had the same problems and the problem usually stems from the wiring between the battery and the starter and the alternator connections.

Take both positive and negitive cable off at the battery and clean both. I've also seen that over the years of cleaning cables and terminals that you can tighten the nuts down tight but yet the cable is not tight. If a good cleaning doesn't correct the problem I would bet on one or both cables being corroded. I've had cables that look good on the outside but when you open them up they are green with corrosion. The fact that you can jump the battery and it starts tells you either the juice in your battery is not getting to the starter or that theres no juice (as in dead) Could be a dead cell in battery too.

Good luck
Charles
