I have a 77 280. It stumbles hard at the begining of acceleration, backfires, however as soon as it get to about 2500 rpm it smooths out. I've cleaned the all connections and checked for any intake leaks but I'm stumped!! can anybody help me pinpoint what is wrong before I have tooreplace everything?

Usually when you get backfire it leads towards the 1) afm.You can open
the afm and clean connections.
The 2) throttle position switch could be out of adjustment .
or 3) the F.I. temp sensor could be faulty.
I would check in that order.

Check your plug wires. On my 78, the were rubbing on the underside of the hood. I put some electrical tape on top of the wires, and on the hood. Helps a lot.
