turn the key to on get 41 14 31
start the car get 14 23 24 31 41

now i dont really understand how to read it first off i didnt even find a code for 23

whats that mean? why dose it repeat the same number with a different problem

1.Idle Switch
2.Transmission Switch
3.Full Throttle Switch
4.Neutral/Park Switch
1.Open or shorted signal circuit
2.Open or shorted signal circuit
3.Shorted signal circuit
4.Open or shorted signal circuit

kinda lost just wondering what all i need to check?

I've seen those instructions and I can understand any resultant confusion.

Code 23 is the throttle vavle switch aka idle switch.
Code 24 is the tranny neutral switch.

Sometimes the ECU will have the codes listed on a sticker.

If you get a FSM from somewhere like http://carfiche.com and follow the factory diagnostic procedure to the letter, then you will get meaningful data from the ECU. Don't forget to make a donation for the valuable service provided by carfiche.com. There is no 86 FSM listed but the 85 should be close enough for these purposes.
