Some pics of my buddy's econo resto


Calif '70 510 The car was last run in Denver before we picked it up in Boston. Took a while for me to figure that that carbs were set for mile high operation. We drove it back from Boston (dropped by Roost Monkeys for a very nice visit). The PO made it very Ghetto and the huge wheels and 0 springs made a rough ride plus the wheels were too big for the wheel wells (we could not turn more than 15 degrees w/o rub!).



Nearly stripped! What a treat. All fasteners came out w/o need for heat or penetrating fluids... well I had to tap the philip's with a hammer to get one screw out.. LOL You guys on the west coast have it so easy!!!!!

Like the flat black spray bomb paint job? LOL "da Bomb"


Undercoating grafitti. That stuff is on good


After dry ice (way over rated) We found that wiping varsol loaded rags worked best. Just let the stuff soak and it wipes right off.


Fresh after varsol rub.

We sanded the rust spots then wiped with mineral spirits to remove the varsol residue. We then we flamed the seams with a propane torch to evaporate any trapped solvent.

We let it dry for a day then sprayed the Rustcheck rust convertor to neutralize any rust and all exposed metal


Two brushed on coats of thick Tremclad grey primer



Two brushed on coats of Tremclad gloss rust paint. Good enough for rock and roll.


Now time to hand over to the pros for the real work! Stay tuned.

Nice project Blue.
Yes, Roostmonkey told us about your visit...and daring trip in that
barely running "project car" .

My 1st Z came from So. Cal.....its amazing that none of the fastners
are rusted. Even un primered hardware in the tunnel...just like
new...30 yrs later.

Question....the paper Nascar standup wearing the Tide colors...
in the pic....is that Ricky Craven ???

OMG!! I would kill for a 510...I've been looking around Washington state but no 510's yet. These pix give me hope.... Please post up the pix of progress. Going to go with sr20dett???mabe??

yup that is ricky craven. I tease my buddy cause having pin-ups of guys seems gay to me...heck is that a Nascar thing? Subliminal gay marketing LOL Anyway he has tons of Nascar stuff even a wall of diecast cars some worth $1500

engine will be the stock L16 to start with (along with dual webbers) then we will turbo and megasquirt

Nice job there Blue.It inspires me to get at my 72 dime. If only I didnt have a 69 Glastron ski boat resto and an RB swap taking up my time.Eventually I'll be scraping undercoating too. Keep the progress pics coming.

Like I'm Sayin'...

Even the most beat-up ghetto looking SoCal car generally makes a GREAT restoration canidate for the very reasons Blue has revealed in this post!

That car would have sold in SoCal for $1500+ just because it's a Dime 2-Dr and there are freaks a-million out here for those cars.

I got the boy's wagon locally incomplete for $400 (Christmas Present), but had to go to West Texas to get my 69 2-Dr Coupe. Both are amazingly rust free for the age and original content!

The 66 Bus I got from DMS here has 1000% better rockers and undercarrige than my more complete 62 that spent years in Michigan. Matter of fact, I realized the wonders of no-salt, low humidity roads when taking apart VW engines in the junkyard after moving out here. Those pan-head screws were nothing more than rusty rivet-looking things on all my East-Coast/MidEast Engines!!!

And I haven't had a rusted-out gas tank here yet!

Definately keep us posted. I'm showing The Boy this post for 'inspiration'!

btw take a look at the "2 coil" springs in the struts laying on the "carpet" in the second pic from the top... yes I told my buddy to remove the carpets from the garage before someone sees us!!! Life size cardboard posters of men in flashy suits with laundry soap words and carpets! What will they think? "Hey did you two big strapping mechanics buy your car in San Francisco?" Digressing... yes the PO completely killed the front suspension. Every bump on the way home was like getting hit with a hammer. We would cringe upon seeing a pothole that we could not avoid! then !!!!!!B A N G!!!!!! Are you alive?


Speeding through Maine (with the ghetto instrument pod duct taped to the pillar... Classy)
