My z is in the shop. It lost compression on number 3 cylinder. I took it to one of 3 Z-car specialists in my area. Anyhow they said the valve seat was completely worn out on number 3 and the rest are very worn also. They said it was cheaper to replace the head. They have an E31 they would like to sell me and put it in my car instead, along with my cam, motorsports headers and stuff. By the way my car is a 71, stock bottom end. What are the pros and cons of swapping to an E31 instead of my E88 and how much should I be looking at. Im thinking if i get out of there for 1000 dollars ill be lucky. Thank everyone for the input in advance. They are supposed to call me in the morning to let me know the costs. They said swapping to the E31 which is in very good shape will cost "less" than fixing the E88. Laterzzzzzzzz Mark

If the E31 is in good shape, then go for it. It will raise your compression and is a perfect fit for a 71 L24. The E31 heads are going for $150+ in non-rebuilt condition.

Make sure they back up the condition of the new head with some warrenty. If the head is bad out of the box, then they should replace it again for free.

Re: Correction

Sorry the machine shop which is next door to the z-shop has an E31. I still havent heard back from them about how much to redo the E-31. Has anybody ever had their head rebuilt? How much did it cost? Mine has brand new cam, rockers, springs so it doesnt need much I wouldnt think?? I dont know. Im afraid that Im going to get screwed for christmas. They said 600 dollars to pull the head and fix the valve, at that time we thought just a valve had broken or stuck. So I dont know. Thanks for all of your input and answers. Laterzzz Mark
