I'm getting quite close to (hopefully) running my '81 ZX for the first time, but I'm having concerns about how I've run my fuel lines to the fuel rail.
Since the fuel rail I mounted needs to have the fuel pressure regulator mounted elsewhere, and I can't find a location for that, I stuck the return line and old regulator at the forward end of the rail towards the radiator and connected my feed line to the port closest to the firewall.

Will this setup still work?

if not, any tips on where to mount the fuel pressure regulator without having to remove any cruise control/air conditioning components?

Yes, the fuel rail I ordered is from zcardepot

It's a pressurized system, fuel direction does not matter. Especially on a fuel injected vehicle.

On any system it definitely matters on fuel direction especially on a fuel injected vehicle. The fuel supply should go to the fuel rail first, then to the fuel pressure regulator. If you doubt me try hooking it up backwards and what will happen you ask? The engine won't start. Z man of Washington
