DIY Custom Intake System

2368 Views 35 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Cuis-Z
I just spent the past 2 months designing, building, and installing a 2.5" custom aluminum tubing intake system on my car. I did everything except for welding the tubes together. My advice to anyone considering this task is "Don't do it". I spent approximately $450 in welding fees, $200 in universal 0.065" wall thickness aluminum tubing kit, another $100 in silicone pipe couplers. and a ridiculous number of hours doing all of the above! Long story short, buy a custom intake from Ash or some other manufacturer.

Pics??
Yikes...that sounds like a long time. We fabbed some 3' pipes up for my JZ swap in a matter of hours. Also did a set of VG pipes so there were less hose connections in about 6 hours. Why did it take 2 months?
Way back when, and once upon a time, I made an intake for my 4 cam, GT-2, 300ZX, using three 48mm IDF Webers. Total time was 4 1/2 months. Each barrell fed a cylinder.
Soup cans are about 2.5 in diameter.
Oh no... not the soup can thing AGAIN!

not to mention a tasty bbq smell out of the exhaust ;D
oh and one more thing... if anyone could manage to build the turbo intake pipes (accordion pipes substitutes) that would be one **** of a sound upgrade for the VG engine IMHO

Can you make them less of a pain in the ass to take on and off than stock?

I've been talking to Ash, you can see where I posted about it later on in this post.

close, but no dice. The ones from z1 are silicone which would dampen the sound of the engine. I was talking about aluminium or some other metal that would enhance the engine sound just like a short ram does on most other cars.
Agreed, I want more intake and spool noise not less...
Go look at the twinturbo.net thread I posted guys, Ash is releasing these. Told me himself they are going to be made of aluminum. Check it out.
I wonder what Ash's kit will sell for (FULL Kit).

sorry to burst your bubble too, but those are not the accordion INTAKE pipes, those are the regular steel boost pipes COMING from the turbos...

check out the difference of a short ram when it comes to sound. It does amplify whatever noise is produced by the engine making it sound a whole lot meaner!

THESE are the accordion pipes I'm talking about, all the other pipes post turbos are meaningless to the aggressive note on any car... if it can make a civic sound like that... imagine what the VG would sound like ;)
