I recently bought an '81 280ZX engine to rebuild and put in my 240z, but It's going to take a while for me to do. Can I use the distributor from the ZX with my current 240 engine? What else would I need? Would a new coil and some minor rewiring do the trick?

Jordan, Yes, you can put the 81 280zx distributor in with the spacer, a little wiring, and the zx coil. We do it all the time, and have sold several setups to people in this forum.
I have received responses with very good results,
in quicker starting, and better performance.
If you put the 81 280zx engine in your 240z, you will have to deal with the fact that it is not cut out for the manual fuel pump. You can get it machined out, or use an electric one for carbs, and regulate it. Joe

Do you have a wiring diagram I could look at? I don't have a manual that includes the ZX, so I am having a tough time figuring it out.
