on my 280zx, when the engine gets up to operating temp. it is starting to just quit. If we are moving it just jump starts itself and we keep right on going. If I am slowing down to stop or make a turn it dies and I have to wait a couple of minutes till it will start again.

I check on the net and was told it could be the coil or ignition module. I don't want to just start changing parts, has anyone else had this problem, and what to do about it.

Thanks

aZman,
I recently was given a 1982 280ZX from a friend because it has turned into a complete pile. My Z is also having that same sort of problem. The engine will start right up, except it takes a while to get oil pressure. After i let the engine warm up, and put it into 1st gear and start to let the clutch out, the engine will start to sputter and then die. Yet, it will start right up again. Then other times it might not. If you come back to it after a few days it will run just fine without a problem, and i can take it into town. The ingition modual was replaced and the problem presists. I never know when it is going to run right or not.

We need a bit more info.

What year ZX?

When you say "it is starting to just quit." what do you mean? Does the tach immediately drop to zero? If yes, then, (a) lose / corroded wires in the ignition system, (b) bad pickup coil / reluctor / stator / air gap inside dizzy, (c) ignition module on dizzy going bad.

What RPM does the tach show when it stops? If it is less than 500 RPM AND does not immediately hit zero, does the Idiot light on the oil pressure gauge come on? If yes, set your idle RPM to at least 700 RPM.

Does your fuel pump stop running?

Other than telling you to get a Factory Service Manual start cleaning every electrical connection you can find.

Good Luck

I've had this problem for some time now. My car runs great if I let it sit for a couple of days (have no idea why), then after I drive it for a good while,....it just dies. It starts up about 5 - 10 minutes later and then will just die again in a few minutes. I've replaced everything except the AFM. I've followed everyones advice on this board that has ever responded to my cries for help. I've taken it to 4 different mechanics, one of which was a Nissan dealership. No luck. If you figure it out let me know.
