My cruise control stared becoming irratic a year ago. It wouldn't come on at the first attempt. When it did engage, it would disengage itself after a few miles. Now it won't even engage at all.

I have read about others cleaning the contacts....what contacts are they referring to? I have tried swapping out the cluster on the steering column as well as the switch on the dash...no change. Please help.

Not sure what model Z ya got, but on my 86' the contacts behind the brake and clutch pedal were not raised up enough. I think I took a 'zip tie' and put it around the pedal arms which decreased the distance between the contacts.. just a thought.
Anyway, that's how I fixed mine. e-mail me if you need more info.

When this problem popped up on my 81 280Zx one of the small vacuum lines had split and it would go into cruise, but shortly it would disengage. There is a small vacuum line on intake manifold check real careful
