Hi,
I have a 73 Z. I like the 4 speed a lot but would like a five speed. I'm considering a 77-79 transmission or a Borg Warner trans but I was thinking it would be cool to have the low geared 4 speed and have a higher geared 5th gear like an overdrive.
My Question is, Is it possible to take a later 280ZX (post 79) Trans, take out the first 4 speeds and some how replace them with the 4 speeds from my 73?

You would need a cluster gear, input gear and 2nd,3rd,and 4th gears from the mainshaft. They would have to be from the same trans I.E. matching. A truck transmission I believe from a 620-670 P/U I don't know the ratios but they would be lower but not the same as the 4 speed. The 4 and 5 speeds don't share the same parts. Over all it would seem like a lot of work and trouble to go through. It would be far easier to chang your final drive ratio, cheaper too!
