I have never heard of anyone doing this but I I really couldn't stand the look of my crash bumpers so I took them both off. It looked a little weird at first but I i am getting usede to it? Has anyone done this? My 280 feels a little quicker now, they must have weighed at least 50 lbs between the both of them.

Absolutely, people do that all the time or replace them with 240Z bumpers (chrome cosmetic bumpers) or aftermarket fiberglass ones. I would like to know if this legal though? What about from an insurance stand point. Does anyone know?

OK now granny backing up in her caddy hits your car guess what will take the hit, your body... Big buck wasted... Fiberglass same thing, 240 not much help but anything is better then nothing... At least the fiberglass will make some noise and she might stop before she tears up your taillight panel and hatch or your grill and bonnet... BTW the big 280 bumper is only has a 5 MPH rate.

When you get into a huge accident, those big bumpers won't do anything. If you hit something going over 20 mph, any car is likely to be trashed.

BTW, Those 240 bumpers are useless. Have you ever seen a pic of a 240 in a fender bender? The bumper crushes like tin foil and the hood gets mashed. You can flex those bumpers with your two fingers. Just be careful in parking lots.

Actually got rear ended by a old Ford 4x4 at a stop light when his accelerater stuck. The shocks and rear bumper did exactly what they were designed to do and the only damage was the over hanging trim lip on the 280. I was impressed if it had been any of my other cars I woul have had a Ford 390 hatchback conversion.
If you go a fiberglass bumper for looks there is no reason why you cant put 3/8" plate steel underneath. I guess I'm just a wimp as far as safety. I drove a volkswagen bus for to many years and never got used to the idea that the only thing between God and I was a spare tire.
