I have an '83zx that I absolutely love. The only problem is the *#&% automatic AC. Does anyone know about the possibility of switching it over to a manual system? If so, is it very difficult or expense? Thanks in advance for all assistance.

Just to let you know, I'm currently getting quotes of $800 to $1500 for labor alone.
Those are from the few shops willing to do the job. That's including the fact that I'm supplying a donor 5 speed car and buying a clutch package.

Gary, As I have posted before, it isn't a big deal
to change it over, and you don't have to discharge the ac. The parts from us would be in the $125.00 range, and I would also change the heater valve, and install a new Nissan one.
We are doing one for a customer from this forum, and estimate 3-4 hours including r and r dash.
We have found ths to be a permanent solution to a
very common problem. Joe at ALL Z EAST 1-800-533-5659

Now if All Z east is going to charge only $125 for the parts plus whatever the labor is for the 3-4 hours, that is a great deal. From what I have found out with the conversion it is not only the tranny that is to be replaced. You will need a nice new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pedal assembly, master and slave cylinder. I am not done yet. Oh yeah , if you have the turbo version you must also change the brain to one from a manual car. This is essential in a Turbo car with the calculating of the erratic rpm changes when shifting gears. Other than all the parts, the time to change this will only depend on your level of expertise. I would usually give yourself a day if you have all the parts on hand and a helper.

I read Gary's request to say auto ac to manual
heat/ac system. I didn't think he was referring to the transmission, which we have also done.
2 out of our 3 responses read it to be about changing the transmission.
Gary, if you are talking about climate control to manual system, great. If you were talking about the transmissions, type again, and i will respond again. thanks, Joe
