For those that are looking for a affordable solution to a cold intake system to make your Z breath better, run cooler with more HP. I think I found one. I purchased the one that MSA sells and it came after a months, and I thought it was too expensive. Well after testing I found that the filter may not have been the best for the air flow we need. So I developed my own intake tube and a friend who works at a import motorsports shop let me test 5 different air filters with different flow patterns.

My design looks better because there are many more colors to choose from even crome. You can install the system using the same rubber boot that connects to the AFM. Also an adapter can be added to ensure water does not enter the system.

I found my design had better low end torque and the top end was unbelivable. Let me know if you are interested than I will sell them on E-bay at maybe a lower price.

Re: you could hear and feel the difference..

Don't need them yet. We could hear and feel the difference from standing idle to full throttle. The K&N filter had too much occliation of air inside.

Re: you could hear and feel the difference..

I've done something similar for much less, again with no drag times or dynos to back it up. it sure looks cool tho.

monsterdog, what car did you do modify? 240, 260, or 280?

i know that my 280 had a stock cool air intake, it was just crappy, and was easily modified. My situaion used some ABS pipe [draniage pipe], ABS glue, a K&N filter, 1 bailing wire, and 2 feet of camoflauged duct tape. (i kid you not, the duct tape and bailing wire helped)

the right ABS 90degree pipe connect fits perfectly into the stock 280z air inake ($5.95), before the AFM. connect that to a short (4-6 inches) abs pipe (i picked up for free), then to another connector($5.95), which the K&N filter (~$30)slides into (not around, like other setups.) i used a bailing wire ($0.02) to tie it to the front part of the frame, so it wouldn't move around when i take hard corners, and i duct taped the part where the pipe connectes into the stock part, just for good measure.

results:
3" cool air intake, for under $50, and 20min (30 min if you count waiting for the abs glue to dry)
i doubt i'll ever need to upgrade it.

i'll post pics if you want.

All I wanna know is: Is it better looking than the one in the archives (Ferrari?) made out of metal chimney/ducting from Home Depot? Sheesh you guys, the K&N from Motorsports is on sale for $119 this month. For that you get: Perfect fit, reliable back-up, easy-to-find filter, and no duct tape.

Re: Its better looking than MSA

Its better looking than MSA. No duct tape. The intake tube comes in 3 colors and the filter is a lot prettier and efficent. You would be amazed of what one can design out of desperation. OH Yeah half the price.

Re: Nope get rid of yours....

I actual put together my prototype for less than $50.00. Its looks better than MSA. The tube is polished crome and the cone box is cromed with your choice of colors for the filther and it flow good. The cold air induction system adds to the appearance of the engine compartment 100%.

You will get rid of your set-up fast...

Re: Its better looking than MSA

Lets also remember that we have to FILTER the air as well as letting it flow better. No filter would let it breath unrestricted, but I personally want clean air going through my AFM , throttle plate and turbocharger. I can live with a little restriction.

Re: Since you so smart...

Mr. 83 zx turbo since you soo smart I dont see why you have not built one yourself. It took me 15 minutes to find out how to put one of those sytems together. 2 weeks to find the parts suppliers. What I did not know was how cheap is was going to be and the performance was really good.

As soon as I go to best buy and buy a digital camera I will let you see the design.
I'm spending $300.00 to show this to all of you. I'm doing this to help all my Z brother out. If you have some positive things to help please let me know. If not I still believe in negtive feed back this really helps too.

Thanks.

Re: Since you so smart...

FYI i built one over 3 years ago for my 79 280ZX and i'm going to build another one for my current 280ZX turbo. and as far as your performance claims they are worth jack doodly squat until you have emprical data to back up your statements.

also why don't you provide some proof about this "occliation" that you refer to of the k&n that makes it so bad compared to your magical filter. or do you even understand the mis-spelled incorrectly used terms that you are spewing forth from your keyboard?

besides if anyone does a search on this forum they will find about 3+ different ways to make one for about half your price.

Re: Why are you dropping to the getto

I will not provide dyno results... for $79.00. You can take it or leave it. When you see my Z car you will know that i am very serious about this. I've had my Z for 22 years and have plenty of money to do what ever I like. I do not need you....

I am doing this to help other out If you want to drop to the getto with your attitude and not help then you will loose out on this. In fact you will have the pictures tomarrow. I spent $300.00 on a digital camera just to shut you up.

P. S we tested various filters and the K&N had less of a hiss than the higher performance filters they are new to the market. However, the K&N was a much higher priced item. The beauty of this set-up you can use any filter you'd like. However, you can buy the other parts dirt cheap but on par or better than what motorsports is selling thats all. In fact I love Motorsports. Have been shopping there for 15 years. However, I will not spend that kind of money on parts if I can find it cheaper. In this case I hit the jackpot.

Todays test run yield another suprise. The car ran cooler by 5 to 10 degrees. Also we too apart a sang before I had to shut the car down. We were testing for vibration of the whole cold induction air system as I had to fabricate a hold down braket. No stress was found.

Re: Nope get rid of yours....

How soon could it be expected? As I asked on two of your other posts, is it ready to bolt on the early Z cars, such as my stock 240? What are the dimensions (Length, diamether of small end, large end, and the piping)? Thanks, Ernest
