clutch pressure plate part totally confusing for ordering

673 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  steves280
i have a 73 240z with a 79z 5 speed and 225mm flywheel currently in car.

if i go to MSA's site and order a Centerforce ll or DF pressure plate (225mm) for a 70-74, they said i have to use a longer clutch collar from a 280z. if i order CF pressure plate for the same 225mm flywheel for a 75-79 280z they say i dont need a longer clutch collar, yet the CF part numbers are exactly the same for the 2 sets of years. is it a transmission type issue here, say 4 speeds of earlier years as opposed to 5 speeds of later years?

why would earlier year cars (70-74) with same size 225mm flywheel as the later 75-79 280z's also with a 225mm flywheel need 2 diffferent length clutch collars when using same exact part number pressure plates? maybe because earlier 70-74 z's were 4 speeds with a shorter collar and later 5 speeds had the longer one?

it is very confusing, and talking with Summit, MSA, Nopi and several others they are about as confused as i am. im just about forced to use a 225mm flywheel cause no one has a 240mm aftermarket one in stock (at least one around 12 lbs. i dont want a 8 lb'er like fidenza sells.

if i go to a 240mm then all of the above questions and confusion is a mute point.

thanks and sorry for the long post, but im pretty darn confused here on all this.

Re: totally cutch part confused for ordering

tech info here <http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/trans_swap%20parts/4tobear_specs1.html>
Re: totally cutch part confused for ordering

That was exactly what i was looking for. so if they swapped everything over then it should already have the longer collar off of the 79 they swapped in.

i need to contact the previous owner now that swapped the tranny and see if he used "everything" from the 79 z they parted. im hoping they did.

thanks
yup, I have not done a transmission swap (yet) but from what I read, the transmission and collar have to match.

You may want to look into installing a 240SX 5sp transmission. Many have done it but it has not been documented much yet.
the tranny thats in there now is fine. i have to start watching costs anyway with the stroker being done right now.

thanks for your info.

The throwout bearing collar matches the CLUTCH, the tranies are all the same. If you install a 280Z clutch into a 240Z with the original 4 speed, you use the longer 280Z clutch throwout bearing collar. If you use a 240Z clutch with an 82 ZX 5 speed, you still use the short 240Z collar. If you use a 2+2 240mm setup with any tranny, you need the 2+2 collar.

What they are saying is, if you install this clutch into a 280Z, it already has the longer 280Z collar so you don't have to buy one. If you are replacing a 240Z type clutch, you need a 280Z length collar. The fingers on a 240Z clutch are bent back towards the throwout bearing while the 280Z clutch the fingers are flat. That's why the collar is longer on a 280Z. It's not that complicated! :)
