Chuck,
It has been a while since I worked out the numbers. As I recall it using an N-42 head, which is the stock head for the 75/76, if you install flat top pistons from the ZX and no other changes you get somewhere around either 10.0 or 10.4. I do remember that with the flat tops and a 2.0mm head gasket the compression becomes 9.4. I remember this becauase that is the route I want to take. My 76 is getting a full restoration and the engine work will be starting sometime in Nov. I am still finishing up the body right now, in fact set in the new windshield last night, and will be doing the dash and center console/sound system today.
What I plan to run on mine is a 480 lift, 274 duration cam with stainless steel valves, flat top pistons and a 2.0mm head gasket, MSD6AL ignition, MSA headers with a 2.5 inch exhaust sytem, and Ztherapy SUs. Most off the new parts are bought already (except for the carbs) and my local machine shop will do the head work while I will do the final assembly. Power wise I am not really sure and to be honest it is not a big priority. Yea, I want it a little quicker, but this will be a Sunday play toy. The biggest reason I am switching from the FI is not performance but engine bay looks. The FI crowds up the bay to much. If you have seen a Z with a bare bones SU setup and no a/c then you know what I mean. Makes it easier to detail out the engine bay.
Anyway the above is my plan and my opinions. Each of us are probably looking for something different in our cars. Mine is now a bright Dupont Centari yellow with a full MSA aerokit, f-40 wing, frenched headlight shells, and a mildly done custom interior. It won't be raced and will probably only get 6k milkes a year at most. To me the building of the car is the best part not really the ownership and more than likely after a couple of years I will be looking for another one to do, LOL. Take care
Charles
