Don't spill any oil on the ground, the environmentalists are watching.
Seriously, make sure the pan lip is clean and flat
and if it is an automatic, reattach all transmission line brackets

Also, don't pry the lip with a screwdriver to get the pan off the block. It'll bend the lip and never seal properly.
Use a thin, flat gasket scraper and hammer it in around the pan in several places to break the seal, lightly prying it will then drop the pan.
To get the pan off, it helps to undo the motor mounts and lift the engine a couple of inches with a floor jack.

If you have access to an engine hoist, that really helps to lift the engine, enough to get the pan off.
