How rare is a canvas sunroof Z? I have located one but have not gotten close enough to tell if it is a 240 or 260. The owner claims it is original and that he is the original owner.

Nope....

If by canvas roof you mean convertible, they never made canvas roof Z's until the Z32 I think. People have transformed first gen Z's into a convertible, but it is a totally custom job.

If you mean a landau roof, I think they were offered as an accessory by the dealer, but I don't know who in their right minds would do that to a Z.

Re: Nope....

This car had an area in the front center of the roof, approx the size and same location as a metal slider or glass sunroof, but was made of canvas. it folded back like an accordian. An older fellow owns it and bought it new - as is off of the lot.

I have one on mine...

They aren't original in terms of original from the factory, they were mostly a dealer installed option. Mine has a British canvas roof just like they installed on some MG GT6s. It is bigger than a sunroof and way cooler. It folds back like an accordian (as per previous post).

My 2 cents? I nearly didn't buy the car when I seen it. Then I figured, well, I can always replace it with a sunroof. First couple of sunny days and I was sold. It works great and is way better than a sunroof - it opens the car up completely! As for the looks? Well I personally think it suits the vintage of the car, it closes tight to the roof so it doesn't screw up the body lines. Mine is only the second Z I have ever seen with it (the other Z had an indentical roof) so like or not, it is definitely a conversation piece!

I think you'll come to like it so I wouldn't let it put you off. Mine isn't in bad shape but I intend on having it recovered when I completely redo the bodywork on my car.

Yhea I've seen a couple of 260Z here in Oz with those...

Personally, i dont like the look of it, plus I'm sure they would be much more prone to leaking. I looked at one with a roof like that and I didnt buy it because of that.

Similar setup to the Mazda 121 FunTop a few years back (if they sold that in the US)
